2014 San Miguel Open

The entire “banda” from Veracruz, Colima, Nayarit, Baja California Sur, Oaxaca, Guerrero, California, Japan and Baja Norte gathered in Ensenada recently to participate in the San Miguel Open, a tradition in this northern part of the country.

All donning wetsuits to brave the frigid rights at San Miguel in order to take home the glory. On Saturday, the waves were between 2 – 3 feet and Sunday brought a little swell with 3 – 5 foot waves for the finalists to compete in.

Due to the proximity to California, professional judges came down to help out, some of whom work for the ASP.

In the bodyboarding category, eighteen competitors signed up and Miguel Torres, a local of Rosarito, ended up taking home first place.

“My final was pretty complicated because the levels of the competitors were good,” commented Miguel Torres. “Fortunately, I was able to catch the best waves of the heat and took advantage of that, making the best scores and had the good fortune of winning, even though I fractured a finger in the first heat.”

The awards in the Pro Open included cash prizes, while other categories were awarded prizes from the sponsors that included boards, boogies, wetsuits, glasses, clocks, etc.
